What to Expect from a Retained Advisory Relationship
The retained advisory arrangement at Prime Horizon Lab is the service that clients most often ask about before they understand it, and most often renew after they do. The concept is simple: a structured monthly relationship with a consistent thinking partner. The value comes from continuity, not from any single conversation.
The monthly rhythm in practice
The first call of each month is a review call. It covers the decisions made in the previous four weeks, the outcomes where they are visible, and what the client is carrying into the next month. This call typically runs 45 to 60 minutes. It is not a status update. It is a structured reflection, and the questions asked are designed to surface assumptions that may not have been examined.
The second call is a working call on a specific problem or decision. The client identifies the topic in advance, usually by email a few days before the call. Jack prepares a short written frame for the conversation, which is shared before the call begins. The call then works through the problem in a structured way, and the outcome is documented in a short memo sent within 48 hours.
Written responses and why they matter
Between the two monthly calls, clients can send questions by email. The response arrives within two business days and takes the form of a short structured memo rather than a conversational reply. This format is deliberate. A memo requires the question to be framed clearly, and the response to be reasoned rather than reactive.
Several clients have described these memos as the most useful output of the arrangement. They are kept, referenced, and occasionally shared with other members of the leadership team.
The quarterly review session
Every three months, the monthly rhythm pauses for a half-day review session. This session steps back from the immediate problems and asks whether the overall direction is still right: whether the strategy the client is executing is still the right strategy, and whether the advisory relationship is serving the right questions.
This session is included in the monthly fee. It is conducted in person where geography allows, and by video call otherwise.
The minimum commitment is three months. After that, either party can end the arrangement with 30 days written notice. Most clients who reach the three-month mark find the rhythm useful enough to continue.
